ALSA National Forum 2014 is an annual event of ALSA where it was the honour of ALSA UKM to organise it this year on behalf of ALSA MALAYSIA.It was held from 28 March 2014 till 30th March 2014 in National University of Malaysia.Delegates from various law schools in Malaysia like UM,UUM,UKM,UNIZA,IIUM,HELP,INTI,MMU and many other come law institutions came under one umbrella of association to discuss, analyse and exchange ideas on various significant legal issues within Malaysia,Asia and in the international region.
The theme of NF 2014 is Criminal Justice and Crime Prevention. The theme stems from the very premise that the social development and economical stability of a country is very dependant on the safety, security and peace.of that country. Such requirement cut both ways – first to the society in terms of a safe environment and secondly, to an accused in terms of natural justice and intrinsic rights to a fair trial. The forum topics circulated around Prevention of Crime Act,Refugees and asylum seekers,The rehabilitative Role of Prison and Crime Prevention with Safer Malaysia but also extended to other areas of criminal justice and crime prevention during the question and answer session. Well known speakers such as Mr James Devanayagam from Suhakam and Mr Christopher Leong from the Bar Council were invited to give talks on respected forum topics which was very informational and inspirational. The table discussion which followed after each session of forum was fruitful as delegates were passionate, rational and aggressive in expressing their analogy and ideas on crime prevention. The table discussion exposed students to exchange their ideas deliberately and effectively in a group of legal student from all over Malaysia and it is a rare opportunity. On the 29th of March 2014,the Gala Dinner with the theme of “Oscar Night” was held in Danau UKM.It was a non-academic session for students to network and mingle around with the delegates from other universities. Its a night for all the delegates to dress their best and ready to rock the night. It was surely a night to be remembered by all. The event is to be considered as a huge success as it managed to reach its objective which is to inculcate, encourage, and strengthen awareness of law students of the issues of criminal justice and crime prevention. In essence, raison d'être of this forum is the betterment of Malaysia in which each and everyone of us, regardless of race or religion, hold hands to promote a safer Malaysia.
